Divorce

In Connecticut, it is not necessary for a party to prove fault in a divorce. Though a judge may consider fault when determining property division and alimony matters, Connecticut is typically considered a "no fault" divorce state. I can help you understand what this means for your case and how it may affect the outcome. I also handle uncontested divorces where the parties have made arrangements outside of court. Usually in these cases, no children are involved, as issues involving children are frequently highly contested. I can also provide mediation services to help you resolve outstanding divorce issues.

Property Division

Dealing with the division of property in the course of a divorce can be complicated. Parties may argue over what is separate property and what is part of the marital estate. Through careful analysis and an eye to detail, I can help clients pursue the property to which they are entitled, which can include homes, cars, property, personal items, pensions, 401ks, stock options and many other types of assets.

Spousal Support/Alimony

Though spousal support (commonly known as "alimony") is not ordered in every divorce case, each situation must be examined to determine if it is appropriate to award one spouse payments from the other spouse. Many factors are considered by the court when determining spousal support, including the age of the parties, length of the marriage and income earning capacity of each spouse.

Children's Issues: Child Custody and Child Support

When a divorce involves children, it is especially important to keep their best interests in mind when settling issues like child custody and child support. There are a few different types of custody that may be sought, including joint custody and sole custody. I can take the time to discuss the different custodial arrangements, and how it may impact all of your lives. Also, child support is ordered according to state-set guidelines that can be confusing. As an experienced attorney, I can walk you through these guidelines and determine how much support you may be entitled to or ordered to pay.
